Shameka’s Bio:

Scream of Joy

Shameka has never known what it is like to have a home of her own. Throughout her life, she has only known renting or living with family.

Originally from Wisconsin, Shameka is the oldest of three children. She has lived in Tennessee since 2005 and works as a Program Specialist with the State of Tennessee.

Several years ago while living in Davidson County, Shameka applied with another Habitat affiliate, unfortunately, did not qualify for the program. At that moment, she thought she would always be a renter and no longer considered homeownership an option.

In 2014, Shameka moved her family to Rutherford County so that her boys could receive a better education.  Still a renter, Shameka learned her neighbor applied for the Habitat program and suggested that she do the same. Figuring she had nothing to lose, she applied again.

Shameka will never forget the day she received a call that would change her life.   She was standing in the produce aisle at Kroger when she heard that she was accepted into the Habitat program. She let out a scream of joy.  “It is like a dream that I did not know was possible and now it was going to come true,” she said with a big smile.

Shameka had spent so many years convinced that she would never own a home. Now that Habitat has come into her life she is embracing every part of the program with enthusiasm, joy, and gratitude. She truly feels that every aspect of Habitat is setting her up to be a successful homeowner.  “From meeting new people to the budgeting classes and putting in sweat equity, it is all new and exciting,” Shameka said with tears of joy.

Shameka and her sons are looking forward to the many blessings this home will bring. Most importantly, a place for all of her family to gather.

Shameka would like to thank her sponsors Schneider Electric, THDA, Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, Pinnacle Bank, City of Murfreesboro, United Way, Ann Hoke & Associates, and SEC Inc. as well as all the many volunteers who have helped make her dreams of homeownership a reality.
