MKL Day of Service

Martin Luther King Day is an annual federal holiday, celebrated the third Monday of January, that honors the birthday of Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to community service. The holiday was established when Former-President Bill Clinton signed the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday and Service Act in 1994 at the urging of Coretta Scott King, Civil Rights Leader and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) and former Sen. Harris Wofford (D-PA). The holiday is observed as “a day on, not a day off” and is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social issues and honor Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Candace’s Bio:

Continuing A Legacy

Candace lost her mother to Alzheimer’s in 2016. Before her mother passed, she told Candace that she would be the one to bring the family together again. Candace took those words to heart, used her mother’s encouragement, and began her journey to becoming a Habitat homeowner.

Originally from Rutherford County, Candace is the third oldest of eight children. When she was a little girl, the family lived in public housing. However, her mother was determined to make sure her children grew up in a nice home, and in one-year time saved enough money to buy a house. Candace has survived six heart attacks and a stroke while raising three kids. She credits her mother and grandmother for instilling a strong will and drive to never quit.

In the Spring of 2018, almost ten years since her first experience with Habitat, Candace decided to apply for the program. When she found out she was accepted as a future homeowner her immediate response was, “Thank You Jesus!” She praises Him for restoring her and preparing her for this season in her life. She has needed a spirit of love in her life and the Habitat program has given her just that.

Candace is extremely grateful to all those who are donating their time, talent, and treasure to make this dream come to fruition. She is looking forward to continuing her mom’s legacy and bringing the family together once again.
